What is keratoconus?
The cornea is the transparent dome at the front of your eye that focuses light onto the retina. In a healthy eye, it is roughly spherical. In keratoconus, the cornea gradually thins and starts to bulge outward into a cone shape. This distorts how light enters the eye, creating blurry and distorted vision that no spectacle prescription can fully correct.
What are the early signs of keratoconus?
- Frequent prescription changes — needing stronger lenses every few months
- Ghosting or double vision in one eye
- Halos and glare at night
- Glasses that never quite work
Who gets keratoconus?
Keratoconus affects approximately 1 in 2,000 people. Eye rubbing is a significant risk factor. It typically worsens in the late teenage years and early twenties.
How is it treated?
Specialty contact lenses (RGP, scleral, Rose-K) vault over the irregular cornea and provide a smooth optical surface. Corneal crosslinking (CXL) can halt progression.
